by Jena Finch-Manchester, Associate Pastor & Campus Minister

Homecoming this year was different than any other. Last year, we honored the ministry of Gary Putnam as campus minister. This year, we decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Reconciling Statement. As we welcome back the ISU alum, we also welcome back the Wesley Center alum. Some of those alums participated in creating the Reconciling Statement. And the new paraments and stoles we revealed in worship the previous week were a perfect fit for this as well! Oh, and feed them, a potato bar last year was a big hit! Got it!

For this year, postcards were sent, emails were sent, even text messages and phone calls went out to invite friends who might be interested and available to attend. Groceries were ordered so we could provide lunch. Our bus was ready for those who wanted a ride there. CyRide schedules were acquired (and studied) so alums could park at the church for free and enjoy someone else navigating the traffic.

Our altar was festive with rainbow streamers, pompoms, and beads (cardinal and gold colored). The tables were festive and bright, the kitchen all abuzz (thank you). We are ready! One more prayer! Worship was beautiful with all the voices reading the Reconciling Statement. Hearts were moved at how we placed ourselves in a unique position to lead our denomination to make changes. And 25 years later, our denomination has changed! Go watch the video of worship if you missed it!

After lunch, some of Wesley alum gathered near the Epworth Annex, Koinonia Community, The Dwelling, and Wesley Place. As our alum returned for the football game and time with us, we hoped to share stories about this building that has been a place where people lived in community and ministry happened. It seemed fitting to share these memories as our special Church Conference approved a plan for removing this building and other changes to our physical footprint.

We recognize that some who were not able to attend this weekend will still grieve the decision to remove this building. However, the building will not be removed this week, or next. It will take some time. So, you may still stop by, send an email (or a card), to share your memories of Wesley Place. We would love to see you! Let’s stay in touch!
